REVIEW || Travalo Classic HD

Hey guys! Today's review is on the Travalo Classic HD, which many of you may already have heard of. The Travalos were pretty popular and widely talked about on blogs and Youtube a couple years ago, but I haven't heard much recently. I've also never tried one myself, so when I was asked if I wanted to test and review one, I obviously took the opportunity.

in package

While I was sent this product for review, I have not been paid to talk about it, and as always, all opinions expressed here are honest and my own. =)

out of package

So in case you haven't heard of the Travalo before, it's basically a cute little travel-friendly way to carry your favourite perfume with you! Both the Classic and the Milano (Which seems to just have a fancy case around the Classic body) hold 5ml of perfume (65 sprays), are TSA approved, and have a spray top—which is great, because every other perfume application method is pretty annoying, in my opinion! They're also really easy to fill with your perfume of choice! You just gently pull the spray top off your perfume bottle, so you just have the straw-like portion, like so:

Then you position the bottom of the Travalo over the pump of your perfume and pump to dispense the product right into the Travalo. It's really easy, mess-free, and there's a little window on the side of the Travalo so you can see when it's full.

Bottom of Travalo: where you pump the product into the vial

The filled Travalo is super small and easy to store in a purse, makeup bag, or whatever else you might want to carry it in, and also really light. I also like the metal (aluminum?) material the body is made out of, because it feels really sturdy and safe, unlike a glass (or cheap plastic) bottle. And of course, the metal caps stays on well, so your perfume isn't accidentally spraying all over your other belongings!

Travalo with perfume inside.

I have lots of perfumes, but I have my Travalo filled with my Paris Hilton perfume because I'm really basic like that, but also just because it's a perfume I never ever get sick of. Lots of perfumes give me headaches, or just smell too strong or too floral or too sweet sometimes, but I really adore the original Paris Hilton perfume because it's a light, perfect blend of sweet, floral, and fruity. It just smells like happiness.

The Classic HD comes in a 10 great colours: Silver, Gold, Red, Black, Perfect Pink, Plum, Hot Pink, Brown, and Blue. The black and blue (the one pictured in this post) are my absolute favourites, but they're all really pretty! And the Travalo Classic HD retails for ~$19.99, which is pretty reasonable. You can purchase all the colours on Travalo's own site (for $19.99 USD), or a few of the colours are available at London Drugs (for $15.99 CAD) or Ulta.com (for $15 USD). A whole list of stores stocking Travalo can be found here.

Classic HD - 10 colors
Inside the aluminum case

Anyways, I think I've covered everything I wanted to say. the Travalo is a pretty basic product, but if you are someone who wears perfume everyday, or someone who travels a lot, then I think this could easily be an essential for you. Everything about it is so easy. And I could easily see having a couple different ones so you have your pick of your favourite perfumes at any time!

P.S. If you're wondering what the inside of this bottle looks like, I didn't realise until I saw this picture, but you can actually remove the bottle from inside the metal case. From the sounds of it, you can also switch the internal vials between the different Travalo models. This is what it looks like inside:

REVIEW || Demeter Foolproof Blending Duos & Trios

Hi guys! Today I have a review for you on two different fragrance sets from Demeter. The first is the Foolproof Blending Base Note Trio in Vanilla, which comes with three scents (obviously), including Hawaiian Vanilla, Gingerbread, and Angel Food. The second is the Foolproof Blending Duo Customer Fragrance Kit, which comes with two scents: Jasmine and Lavender. (I was sent these two sets for review, but all opinions in this post are honest and my own.)

So the Vanilla Blending Trio includes three scents, as I just mentioned, but on the box the scents came in there was a scent pyramid, showing different families of base, middle, and top notes in fragrance. A whole fragrance usually has a least one scent in each category, and the three scents included in this set fall into each of those tiers: Hawaiian Vanilla is a top note, Gingerbread is a middle note, and Angel Food is a base note. So the idea is probably that when you layer all these scents together, you get a full scent that will last all day, and subtly morph over time, as the top and then middle notes wear away.

Also, in the box, along with the three scent bottles, there were several fragrance strips (like the ones anywhere that sells perfume), so you can try blending different combinations on the strips without spraying the mixes all on yourself! There aren't a ton of these, but once you get the general idea of how the scents work together in different combinations, you don't really need them, and I think there were plenty for that experimentation.

As for how each scent smells, well... Demeter is pretty damn accurate! All of these scent name work perfectly for these fragrances:

  1. Gingerbread smells fantastic, and is probably my favourite scent in this set. It is spicy, just like gingerbread, but might be a tad strong to wear on it's own. Very festive, probably a fall and winter scent for most people!
  2. Angel Food smells light and vanilla-y. It seems very delicate to me (which makes perfect sense for an angel food cake scent), and definitely smells like cake, for some reason. It's great.
  3. Hawaiian Vanilla smells strongly vanilla-y, to me almost smelling like a vanilla-flavoured alcohol! Which is not to say it smells bad, it's really nice! Again, I'm not sure this one is wearable on it's own for me, but maybe if I just really wanted to smell sweet like candy!

After playing with layering these scents on the strips, I have a few thoughts on a couple of obvious combinations, as well:

  1. 1 spray each of Hawaiian Vanilla and Angel Food + 2 of Gingerbread: I added a second spritz of gingerbread to this mix because I felt like the two vanilla scents overpowered the spicy scent, which I love and wanted more of! You could certainly wear this combo with less gingerbread, and it would be less powerfully spicy, but I loved this combo! It smells almost like creamy cinnamon buns...
  2. 1 Hawaiian Vanilla + 1 Angel Food: together, these basically smell like a vanilla cake. So yummy! Also, the Angel Food helps to balance the more powerful Hawaiian Vanilla, which makes it easier to wear both together than Hawaiian Vanilla on its own... in my opinion of course!
  3. 1 Angel Food + 1 Gingerbread: I found this to be a really lovely mix, and nice and wearable. The Angel Food lightens the spiciness of the Gingerbread. Probably my favourite combo!
  4. 1 Gingerbread + 1 Hawaiian Vanilla: together these two smell just like a Bath and Body Works fall candle! It's a powerful and delicious combination that you might not wear unless it's fall/winter. Unless that's just who you are as a person... This combo could also make a great room spray if you do run out of your favourite B&BW cinnamon-y candle!

So those are basically my thoughts on the Demeter Vanilla Trio... Now, let's take a look at the Custom Fragrance Kit!

As you can see in the above picture, this set comes with two fragrances—Jasmine and Lavender—and also an empty bottle, a tiny funnel, and four little droppers. The idea with this set is basically to mix your own custom perfume, which sounds pretty cool. I wish they had included some fragrance strips to test your blend before you start mixing, so I used a couple left overs from my Trio set. If you didn't have both sets, you could always try the blends on your skin, or even cut your own strips from a piece of paper, maybe.

Obviously, you can also wear the scents alone...

Jasmine is a beautiful, light, floral perfume. Jasmine green tea is pretty much my favourite smell of all time, and this smells pretty much like that. So good!

Lavender is a very real, authentic scent. I personally wouldn't wear this one alone, but I know that some people love lavender, even though it just isn't for me. The fragrance, though, isn't too overpowering or fake smelling.

Oddly, when I tried mixing the two scents equally, I felt they created a floral licorice scent. Which was very weird. So I decided to make my mix 1 part Jasmine and 2 parts Lavender, which smells great, and is what I mixed together in my empty bottle!

I'm sure many of you could have come up with a more imaginitive name for this blend, but you can't say mine isn't descriptive! =D All in all, this is very easy and fun to do, though I do also think that you could just as easily mix the scents together on your skin? I guess the main benefit in having it pre-mixed is that you can choose to wear one spritz of your mixture instead of needing three like I would to make my blend on my skin.

Also, I found that the droppers were pretty flimsy, unfortunately! Grabbing more than three squeezes full managed to pop the seams on every single one. That's why my mixed fragrance is so empty; I just couldn't measure any more with those droppers without making a huge mess everywhere! Still, it was fun to play with.

***

I think if you are interested in getting one of these sets, I liked the set up of the Trios more. There are more possible combinations, and no messy droppers to deal with. Both types of sets, however, can be found on Demeter's website. The Blending Trios are $45 (USD?), and the Blending Duos are $35 (USD?). You can also pick your own scents to make your own Trio, if that interests you, for the same price.

So that's everything for today! Let me know if you've tried any Demeter scents before, or if you plan on picking up one of these sets!

Also, thanks to the Canadian Beauty Blogger network for the opportunity to review these products! If you'd like to check out what scents other bloggers received, and read their thoughts on these sets, check out the Link-up below!

VANCOUVER || Roger & Gallet First Canadian Store + Gift Ideas!

A little something different for you guys today; last week I got to go to an event at the first Roger & Gallet store to open in Canada here in Vancouver! It's in the beauty section of the big Hudson's Bay store downtown on Granville Street, if you want to check it out. And you really should! The store is adorable, and they have some great quality products, awesome scents, and surprisingly good prices for a high-end French fragrance brand!

So today I just want to give you a peek into the store in case you either can't go to the store yourself, or to show you if it's really worth it for you, as well as show you the goodies I received from the event, and a little overview of the brand and some of their products!

I took a heap of pictures of the store, since it was just adorable, and so bright, so it was super photogenic! Take a look:

REVIEW || Mr. Bubble Cologne Spray by the Demeter Fragrance Library

I recently received this scent from Demeter thanks to the Canadian Beauty Blogger network. I'm pretty excited to share this with you, because I have loved the idea of the Demeter Fragrance Library for a long time, they have an amazing selection of scents, and this one is really fun!

As a kid, I loved bubble baths. I'm sure lots of people did. I was hard to get into the bath when I was little, though, since I never liked water or getting wet, but if there was bubbles I was there. I liked trying to collect all the bubbles into a pile, and making myself a bubble-beard, and bubble-hats, and a bubble version of Ariel's shell bikini. Bubbles were the best!

I used lots of brands, and I wasn't picky, but Mr. Bubble is a classic, and of course it was one of the ones I used! When I first received this scent and gave it a sniff, it didn't give me instant flashbacks, but I knew it smelled familiar. Like childhood and happiness. And a little like grade 1... which I realise makes no sense, but maybe I used a lot of Mr. Bubble that year, or maybe I had a friend in school that did =P

Anyways, this scent is so much fun. It isn't strong, intensely sweet, or overpowering in any way. It is a soft, somewhat candy-like smell, somewhat powdery, and very clean smelling... because it smells like bubble bath! The staying power isn't great, but it isn't terrible, and this is a pretty inexpensive scent, so I don't think it's a big deal to use an extra spritz in the middle of the day if you need some more.

If you don't just want to go off my poor explanation, Demeter's site describes the scent as: "nostalgic and current: a sharp fruity concoction with notes of coconut, banana and peach. A floral center of jasmine and rose along with a balsamic vanilla and powdery raspberry base, round out this memory-making fragrance." Personally, I don't smell those flowery notes at all, but what do I know about perfumes?!

If you loved bubble baths, and Mr. Bubble, and want a happy hit of nostalgia in the form of a perfume, I'd recommend giving this a shot. You can find this scent on DemeterFragrance.com for $20 USD for 1oz, or $39.50 USD for 4oz.

May 2014 Favourites! (+ Video)

It’s that time of the month again! If you want to see my favourites video, that is ready for you. Either click here to see in HD on YouTube, or watch the embedded video below. Or skip that entirely, and move onto the rest of this post.

Beauty Favourites:

1. The Body Shop Satsuma Shower Gel

I’ve been using this body wash for ages now, and I still absolutely love it. I’ve tried tons of others, but I keep coming back to this. The fresh, citrus-y scent is just so delicious and comforting, without being super sweet. The one pictured above is a travel size, but I also have a full-size bottle.

2. Elizabeth and James Nirvana Black Perfume Roller Ball

I got this little guy as a 100 point perk from Sephora, but at 7 ml, it’s only 3 ml away from being the full-sized roller ball! A pretty generous gift, if you ask me. On top of that, I love the heavy, sweet scent, which is a mix of violet, sandalwood, and vanilla. It can be a little overpowering if you use too much, at least in my opinion, so I’m glad this is in a roller ball, since it’s a really easy way to control the amount of fragrance you get. I love this scent, and if I ever run out, I can totally see myself repurchasing!

3. MAC Amplified Lipstick in Morange

See that bright, Crayola crayon orange lipstick in the picture above? This is literally one of my favourite things ever! I love how weird it is, without being too out there. I love how bright it is. I love how fun and summery it looks. Of course I love the classic MAC chocolate lipstick scent! I love that it’s an Amplified lipstick (by far my favourite formula). There is literally nothing wrong with this lipstick.

***

Non-Beauty Favourites:

1. Stash Jasmine Blossom Green Tea

I know I’ve mentioned this before, and just plain green tea before, but god do I love this stuff! And recently it’s had a come back for me, since it’s getting warmer, and I love having something that isn’t heavy, milky, or sweet to drink when I want it! Great hot, but also cold and ever so slightly sweetened!

2. HBO’s True Blood

I’m super late to the game on this one, but I’ve been loving it! I’m just about done the first season, and while this is far from family friendly—as I’m sure we expect from HBO shows—I love it and can watch episode after episode if I have time. It is gory and full of blood, sex, and swearing, but it is also so fascinating, even though Anna Paquin has a really weird face! >_>

February 2014 Favourites!

Once again it’s that time of the month: Favourites time! Before we get into it, though, I just wanted to point out that, if you’re interested in watching my favourites for the first time ever, I will embed the video below (or click here to watch in HD on Youtube):

Here’s a quick peek at everything:

IMG_0590

1. Urban Decay’s Naked 3 palette:

IMG_0593
This probably isn’t too much of a surprise if you’ve seen my reviews of this both on here on my blog and on YouTube, but this has certainly been a favourite this month! I just really feel like these colours are super versatile and beautiful. I constantly turn to this palette whether I want a more neutral or more smoky look, it’s just awesome.

2. Dior Pure Poison eau de parfum:

IMG_0599
This perfume is wonderful, especially if you like the smell of jasmine (or jasmine green tea, which is what I was looking for when I discovered this fantastic scent!). It’s a fairly light floral perfume, without being either too childish or too old or overpowering. I’m definitely in love with this scent and think it will be excellent for spring and summer!

3. Garnier Fructis Damage Eraser Split-End Bandage:

IMG_0600
Another product that I’ve mentioned recently already, but this one product in particular from the Damage Eraser line has stood out for me as something that really gets along well with my hair. It manages to combat—if not fix completely—my often frizzy hair, and just makes it feel super soft without weighing it down or making it feel like anything but soft, clean hair! Definite love. (Here’s my review on the Damage Eraser line).

4. Urban Decay All-Nighter Setting Spray:

IMG_0597
I can’t believe that I’ve never mentioned this in a favourites post before! I bought this way back when I was in Seattle for PAX 2012, and I’ve used it constantly and been super happy with it ever since. I guess, since it’s such a quick, invisible step it manages to slip my mind each month when I do my favourites posts? I’m still pretty disappointed with myself for never mentioning it though. Also, as I mentioned, I’ve had this for almost 2 years now, and I’m only about half-way through this bottle! A little goes a very long way. And it may seem like a silly step if you haven’t tried it out, but I really do feel like it helps to make my makeup last even longer than it would without the setting spray. I use it pretty much every single time I do a full face of makeup (unless I forget). As I mentioned in the video, this is much more of an All-Time favourite than just a monthly favourite.

Non-Beauty Favourites:

1. Rose Gold Watch from American Eagle

IMG_0596
I’ve been wearing this constantly since getting it… even though I never really use it for its intended purpose (aka: telling time). I think it’s really simple and cute, though, and I love it!

2. Bagels & Cream Cheese

Image from cccuisine.ca

Yum. My favourites are everything bagels with cream cheese. I’ve had a lot of bagels this past month, since they are a yummy, filling, healthier-than-some-options breakfast or snack food. And super easy to throw together, toss in a ziploc bag, and rush out the door. The Jalapeño Asiago bagels from Tim Horton's and the Everything with Cheese bagels from Starbucks are also fantastic with cream cheese. =)

3. Gossip Girl

Image from digitalspy.ca

I finally finished, after however many years it’s been since this show ended, and I’m so glad I made it to the end finally without ever hearing who Gossip Girl was! I forgot how much I missed this gorgeous, wonderful show, and I know that one day I’ll go back and start it from the beginning again, to relive the fantastic characters! If you have never seen Gossip Girl (where have you been?!), you need it. It’s wonderful.

And that’s everything! Let me know either here or on my video what your favourites this past month were, as well as what you think about any of the products mentioned above. Thanks for reading! =)

My Current Shopping List / Wishlist

I thought it would be fun to do a sort of mixed wishlist and shopping list post full of things I both want and also things that I "need".

Of course, I put "need" in quotation marks because, really, does any of us need beauty and fashion items? Not really. But in order to continue my beauty routines and such as I like them, I do need to replace a few things.

Anyways, now that I've bored you with my rambling, lets get to my list:

1. Essie Millionails Treatment/Base Coat:

Image from essie.com

I’ve been out of this for a while and using my Pro-FX ridge filling base coat, which isn’t bad, but my nails have been suffering for the change. The Millionails just really gets along with my nails and helps to strengthen them so that they grow long and healthy with minimal splitting or peeling. Right now, my nails are super short, because they just can’t sustain much length without a little help!

2. Black Sunglasses:

Image from beautyangleshop.com

I’m not sure whether this is more of a need or a want, but the only sunglasses I have right now are bright pink fake Wayfarers, and as cute as they are in the summer, I feel like they look ridiculous any other time of the year and most makeup looks don’t seem to go well with them. Especially dark lips and clothes of fall and winter. However, just because it isn’t summer doesn’t mean that it isn’t sometimes bright out, and I’d love to have some classy sunglasses to wear now.

3. Dior Pure Poison perfume:

This is a pure want. I was looking online for a perfume that smelled like jasmine green tea, since that has to be one of my absolute favourite scents of all time. I would love to walk around smelling like a nice cup of flowery tea, and I considered just getting a jasmine essential oil, but then I found this suggested somewhere online as a mainstream perfume that has green tea and jasmine notes, so I tested it out the next time I was at Sephora. And goddamn is it beautiful! I definitely agree that it has a jasmine scent to it, and it’s so clean and pretty! Waaaant!

4. Simple stud earrings:

I have become a bit of a jewellery princess since my boyfriend got me my lovely silver ring, necklaces, and earrings from proper jewellery stores, and I’ve really started to notice how much my ears hate wearing cheap earrings. Since the only good earrings I have are both dangly to some extent, I have to take them out every night, but I would love to have a normal pair that I can pop in and just wear until I want to wear something more special. Sometime small and simple that I can sleep in and shower with would be fantastic. I’ve found a couple pairs, usually in the “children’s jewellery” sections, that are in the $25-40 range, so I guess I’ll be saving up for that.

5. Rose gold watch:

I’ve loved the Michael Kors rose gold watches for a while now, since watching so many people on YouTube wearing them and giving them away, but now I really want to get one. Of course, I may never have $300 to spend on a watch, but Target has a pretty nice fake one right now for something like $25 or $30 dollars.

6. Urban Decay Revolutions Lipstick in "Catfight":

Image from sophieetc.com

I do already have this colour in a mini, but I love the colour, pigmentation, and formula of this lipstick so much that I want to get it in full size and have it forever. It does cost $26, which is pretty steep, especially considering MAC lipsticks are only $18, but I’ve never seen anything like it from a cheaper brand, and I am so in love.

7. Bath and Body Works Candles in Espresso Bar, Dolce, and Sicilian Orange:

Image from bathandbodyworks.com

I probably won’t get any of these because I have plenty of candles, both fruity and more fall/winter scented. However, that said, I am in love with these three scents! If I had some superfluous money, I would definitely love to pick up one or two of each!

8. New Yoga Pants:

Image from chicaandthecity.com

I love yoga pants for working out, and I currently only have two pairs, one of which is trying it’s hardest to fall apart, while I try my hardest to keep up and continue sewing up holes. So I definitely need at least one more new pair of yoga pants. (A not-black pair would be nice for around the house, too, since they’re so comfy, but I have dogs and black pants are just a terrible idea on the couch and such.

***

And that’s just about everything that I can think about right now. Thanks so much for reading and let me know in the comments some of the things that you’re wanting right now!
