Playing with Holo and Matte polishes

Hello again!

So, I just recently got myself a matte topcoat, so I’m kind of obsessively using it on everything to see how it affects flats and shimmers and glitters. This time, I’m going to show you what happens when you mattify holographic glitter polish, in my case, a holographic topcoat over black polish. First, though, I’ll show you how awesome my black and holo mani looked (please ignore the messy cuticles, as I pretty much never clean them up til I’m completely done):

And this picture is intentionally blurred, to show you the great colours in my holo top coat:

Then, I put the matte top coat over top, which looked like this:

I was really disappointed with the outcome, as the mattifying the holo just makes it look like a boring, plain silver glitter, but completely stops it from shimmering like a rainbow. So, after my base coat, 2 coats of black, the holo, and the matte topcoat… I added a clear coat of shiny clear polish… and dang does six layers of polish take a long time to dry, but it looks so much better that way.

The verdict: please don’t mattify your lovely holo polishes!

Are you loving matte polishes, or do you think they’re totally boring? Let me know!

  1. Funny you should say that about Fiji being a weird name for a baby pink. My sister sent me a bottle of it and Angora Cardi (my first Essies!) and I've spent most of today wondering about the name. Fiji makes me think of bright oranges and greens and many other colours, but certainly not baby pink.

I couldn't live without my matte topcoat, it's great for giving a mani a whole new look. I love using it over chunky glitters and flakies, they look so stunning when matte-ified.

  2. I'm an idiot and thought this post was part of the one above, hence my rambling about Essie. Pardon my silliness.

  3. @Brittany: I love the matte, when I first got it I kind of went on a "matte all the things!" Spree...!

  4. @Little Red: It's all good, I've done tht before too, I think its because of all my pictures...
Also, I'm glad not the only one who would expect Fiji to be orange. I'd like to know what Essie knows that I don't... haha!
And yeah, I love the different look the matte gives glitter, but it does really kill the point of holographic glitter...

  5. Woah, I had no idea that using a matte top coat would have that effect on holographic glitter! I think it looks pretty both ways! ^-^

  6. It still looks cool, but it makes me sad that the holographic effect is completely lost!

  7. You desperately need to learn how to polish your nails. They are so sloppy.
