FAVOURITES || Spring 2017 -- Fashion & Beauty

Hey guys! I live! I know this video is suuuuper late, but I filmed it and wanted to get it up anyways. Better late than never, and all that shenanigans, right?

Anyways, I really am going to try to keep up now. I know I keep saying that, and have been pretty bad the past few months, but I honestly want to give it a go. I feel better, more productive, etc. when I actually keep to some sort of upload schedule, so here goes. Like I've said on my blog before, the plan for now is to start small with a video a week and sporadic blog posts, but with luck and commitment, maybe I can work back to my old schedule!

But you probably scrolled past that wall of text to see what products I mentioned, so here's that list now. If you did read the above wall of text, comment your favourite movie or a video idea for me! ❤

REVIEW || Conair Infiniti Pro Ionic Straightening Brush

Hey guys! Today I've got a quick review for you of the Conair Infiniti Pro Iconic Straightening Brush! I was really excited this was one of the options when the PR for Conair recently reached out to me and asked if I'd like to review some of the products, because I love how my hair looks when it's straight, but with my thick curls, it can take a long time and be a huge pain, and this brush looked super easy to use. And as I'm sure you know by now, though this brush was sent to me for free to review, I will always tell you if I don't like something about a product! All my reviews are honest, and I was not paid to write this post.

Conair Infiniti Pro Ionic Straightening Brush Box

So this brush features ceramic coated bristles (to protect your hair), nylon bristles (which are basically regular brush bristles), as well as soft silicone bristles (which the box claims add shine and control). There is also an ionic generator which is supposed to create negative ions that neutralize the natural positive ions in the air, making hair less frizzy by flattening and sealing the hair cuticle. This generator, by the way, is what makes the strange crackling sound when this brush is turned on! I was concerned about the noise at first, but after looking at the instructions, which explain this, it doesn't seem like a big deal.

Conair Infiniti Pro Ionic Straightening Brush Box info

In the box, you get the brush (of course), an instruction booklet/product warranty, and a heat pad to rest the brush on. Nothing too fancy, and you really don't need the heat pad, but it's a nice little addition.

in the box

After testing out this brush a couple of times, I'm basically in love! It's so quick and easy, I'm not sure why I'd ever use a regular flat iron. I mean, maybe if you really like your hair pin-straight, but I like mine a little more natural, and that is super easy to accomplish with this brush. I have used both the high and medium settings, and both worked on my hair, though the high setting was much faster and more effective. For reference, I do have thick, curly hair. I do still separate my hair into sections, but I don't have to formally go in layers, starting underneath, with all my hair clipped to the top of my head, like I do with a regular flat iron, which is so great. I think it takes me maybe 15-20 minutes to finish my whole head, and that's only because I like to take my time and go over each section to make sure it's even and pretty straight. If you just wanted to tame thinner or straighter hair, you could easily be done quicker! I really like this product, and would wholeheartedly recommend it if you like a natural, mostly-straight look, and hate messing around with flat irons or blow dryers. It's quick, easy, fuss-free... yeah, it's my new favourite hair tool, to be completely honest.

The Ionic Straightening Brush costs around $89.99 CAD, depending where you shop, and is available online on Amazon, as well as from Walmart (affiliate link), HBC, Ulta (affiliate link)—who now ships to Canada!—and just about anywhere else you can find Conair products. Let me know if you get this, or if you've tried it! I'd love to see other opinions, or if you also agree it's magical! **If you're uncomfortable with affiliate links, feel free to Google the product yourself if you wish to purchase online. Thanks!**

Winter Favourites || December 2016 - February 2017

Hey guys! Sorry I missed a couple videos there... I woke up on the 20th with one bright red eye that had glued itself shut overnight, and things just got a little worse from there. I still am hesitant to go back to wearing makeup for a few more days even though my symptoms have cleared up and I did a week of antibiotic drops, but I should be able to film tutorials again starting next Monday. Until then, I have a few different types of videos for you, starting with this product-centric Winter favourites.

I hope you don't mind looking at the products instead of my face for this one, but I wanted to get it up on time! Thanks for watching! =)

REVIEW || Batiste Dry Shampoo + 5 Dry Shampoo Tips

I'm not sure if I've talked about Batiste dry shampoo on my blog before or not, but I have used it a few times. I'm sure its a brand that many people are already familiar with, and it is particularly popular at least in the blogging and YouTube beauty communities, it seems. And with good reason!

This bottle of Batiste was sent to me to review, but I have also purchased other scents before myself, and my review is completely honest and my own!

Also, at the bottom of the post, I've listed 5 of my dry shampoo tips for newbies, or anyone who might not be a big dry shampoo fan. I know I've had a hard time finding the right dry shampoo and figuring out how to use it properly, so hopefully I can help someone else out so you don't have to do the same trial and error thing I did!

Batiste original bottle

While I don't have a whole hell of a lot to say about this dry shampoo, I do think it is the best one I have ever used! Compared to various other dry shampoos, I find that Batiste smells amazing (and comes in a few different scents!), leaves the least residue in my hair (it actually feels really weightless, not grainy or heavy), and works the fastest with the least amount of product, so you actually get more uses out of every bottle!

I've also never had a bottle of Batiste run out of aerosol before it also ran out of product, possibly because of it's super fine texture? So in my experience, I've wasted far less Batiste than any other dry shampoo, which I always seem to have to throw out before I can use it up!

The two scents I've tried out are this one, the original, which smells very fresh and clean, and maybe a little bit lemony? A bit like dish soap or dryer sheets... but I mean that in the best way possible, because I really love the scent and will likely buy myself a bottle when this one is empty!

I've also tried the tropical scent, which is also nice, but very summery. It's an odd one to use in the colder months, because it smells like coconutty sunscreen, which I know tons of people would love (and it is nice), but definitely wasn't a favourite of mine. I really want to try out the leopard print bottle, which I think people have described as having a chocolate-y scent!

Finally, as promised in the title, I wanted to give you a few pointers if you are new to dry shampoo, or just can't figure out how to make it work. So here are some of the things I've had to learn through trial and error so maybe you won't have to!:

  1. Shake the bottle constantly! The more you shake it, the less likely you are to run out of the aerosol you need to get that product out of the can! I like to shake really well before i start, and then give a couple quick shakes between each spritz.
  2. Dry shampoo is not a miracle product. It helps, but isn't as good as a fresh wash. It's disappointing to find out that there is no dry shampoo that will make your hair look truly fresh-washed, but it's best to accept this, and learn to work with what dry shampoo can accomplish: making hair feel less oily and getting rid of that not-clean hair smell.
  3. The earlier you use it, the better it will work. If you know you won't be washing your hair tomorrow and you want to prolong the look of your hair with dry shampoo, I'd put a bit of the product in maybe 12 or so hours after you wash, or sooner if you have really oily hair! So if you wash in the morning, I'd pop in a bit before you go to bed to start soaking up some of those oils before they take over. Then you can add a bit more in the morning to help refreshen, and you won't feel like you're fighting an uphill battle.
  4. Don't just spray it on the top of your hair. Maybe this is obvious to you, or maybe it isn't... but when applying dry shampoo, you need to spray it at your roots in small amount all over your head. I like to lift random areas and spray around the roots, let it sit for a few moments, and then toss my hair around to bring back my hair's volume and help make sure there are no clumps of product to be visible or to irritate your scalp.
  5. You can also use dry shampoo on clean hair for volume or texture. I don't really do this myself, as my hair is pretty textured and cooperative, but if you have very fine or slippery ahir, adding a little dry shampoo to clean hair can help your hair hold a style, if you don't want to wear it down and natural!

Those are all the tips I can think of right now, but leave any more you might have down in the comments, as well as your favourite dry shampoo! Or your favourite Batiste scent!

VANCOUVER || Roger & Gallet First Canadian Store + Gift Ideas!

A little something different for you guys today; last week I got to go to an event at the first Roger & Gallet store to open in Canada here in Vancouver! It's in the beauty section of the big Hudson's Bay store downtown on Granville Street, if you want to check it out. And you really should! The store is adorable, and they have some great quality products, awesome scents, and surprisingly good prices for a high-end French fragrance brand!

So today I just want to give you a peek into the store in case you either can't go to the store yourself, or to show you if it's really worth it for you, as well as show you the goodies I received from the event, and a little overview of the brand and some of their products!

I took a heap of pictures of the store, since it was just adorable, and so bright, so it was super photogenic! Take a look:

Review || Herbal Essences Naked Collection || Shine Shampoo/Conditioner + Dry Shampoo

Hello again, guys! Today's blog post is going to be a review of this haircare line from Herbal Essences that I received for review from BzzAgent! I was pretty excited to try this stuff out, because Ihave had some great results from Herbal Essences before, and the scent sounded amazing even before I received my package!

There are a few different formulations in this new line. I'm not sure if there are more, but BzzAgent gave us the option to choose between the Moisture set, the Shine set, and the Volume set. I clearly don't need any more volume in my thick, curly hair, so I opted for the Shine collection. The Moisture products contain "herbs, mint and essential moisturizers," the Volume ones contain grapefruit and mint, and the Shine forumla has white tea and mint.

And my god! The white tea and mint shampoo smells at least as good as you may think! It's light, fresh, and fruity. Kinda like peaches or nectarines, which probably doesn't make sense, but it's soooo nice! Anyways, enough raving about the scent, I should probably get into telling you about the products.

The point of the Naked Collection is that all of the products are free of silicones, parabens, and dyes. Which is great, since those are unnecessary and not really good for your hair anyways! Silicones (if i remember correclty) basically coat your strands to try and glue split ends back together, parabens may or may not cuase cancer, and dyes... are really just there to make you happy because your shampoo and conditioner are pink or aqua blue. Unless you are using a purple shampoo on your blonde hair, you probably don't need or want any dyes.

Herbal Essences Naked Shine Shampoo

As it has no dyes, this shampoo is colourless and clear, because its basically a clarifying formula. The shampoo removes dirt and impurities from your hair without stripping natural moisture. The bottle doesn't make any grand claims, just promising to clean, reveal natural shine, and leave you feeling refreshed.

One thing I did want to point out, is that, while this shampoo claims to be free of unnecessary ingredients, this shampoo does contain sulfates. Personally, I'm not super bothered by sulfates. I know they're in a lot of our soap products, but I like the foaminess, especially in shampoo. I've never liked a sulfate free shampoo before because I never feel like my hair gets clean... But I did feel I needed to mention it in this review for anyone who is bothered by sulfates and might think this product is free of them!

I think this shampoo is great, honestly. It doesn't do anything too special, but sometimes you don't need a complicated moisturizing shampoo. My hair tends to get pretty oily at the roots, possibly because the curls don't really allow the oils to spread evenly, plus I tend not to brush my hair except for right after I wash to avoid Hermione-hair... (book-Hermione, not gorgeous Emma-Watson-Hermione). I found that this left my hair feeling clean, but not with that horrible squeaky, dry feeling some shampoos give my hair.

I have no compliants about this shampoo, and (partially because of the scent) would certainly consider repurchasing.

Herbal Essences Naked Shine Conditioner

This conditioner claims that it "lightly conditions," which I take to mean that it isn't super moisturizing, but is also meant to not weight down hair.

That's great, and I've had no problems with this conditioner leaving my hair feeling dry, but I do also use a serum or oil on my hair after every time I shampoo. It's just a habit, and I couldn't break it even while testing out this collection. I also kinda feel it would have been unfair to do so, considering I do it no matter what shampoo and conditioner I'm using, so if I didn't here, I probably would have felt my hair was drier than usual, for obvious reasons!

Also, not sure this matters, and I do know that even many skin moisturizers contain alcohol, but I find it weird that this conditioner would have alcohol in it. Just leaving that out there...

The conditioner has the same great scent as the shampoo, and I would, again, consider purchasing this for myself.

Herbal Essences Naked Dry Shampoo

I like trying out new dry shampoos, partially just because I've not found one yet that really worked well for me. The closest so far has been Batiste... but that's not what this review is about.

This dry shampoo uses tapioca starch to absorb excess oil, as well as mint to help refresh your hair. The mint mixed with whatever fragrance they have added, however, smells so citrus-y and fruity, and soooo soooo nice! Can you tell I like how this range smells?!

This dry shampoo did a pretty good job. It's still not magic, but maybe my hair is just a little oilier than other people's... or maybe I wait too long to put it in, so it doesn't have a chnce to be effective? Also, I have really thick hair, so I always feel like a full-sized bottle of dry shampoo only lasts me a few uses. I think I'd be pretty lucky to get 10 good uses out of a dry shampoo... Am I doing this wrong?

Still, that said, I think this is about on par with Batiste. And it smells amazing, so even when it doesn't make my hair look fresh and clean, it makes me feel clean enough to throw it into a ponytail that doesn't look like a grease-ball, and I know that I'm going to smell fantastic.

***

I imagine, just going off of how these products smell, that both the moisture and the voume formulas would also smell fantastic. Hoestly, that's kinda just Herbal Essences's thing, anyways. I would certainly recommend giving this line a try if you're looking for a new shampoo, no matter which of the forumlas you try out. Herbal Essences is probably one of the cheaper drugstore haircare brands, which is great because they're still really good! Plus, it sounds great to skip some of the bad ingredients that are in so many of our products without having to resort to an organic, indie, expensive brand!

Thanks for reading!

These products were sent to me for free for review. This post is not sponsored. All opinions expressed are honest and my own.

Review || Conair Infiniti Pro "The Ultimate Brush"

Hello again! I'm so sorry that I've failed so hard at the book series that I wanted to start. I do want to get to it, but I think it will be a lot more sporadic than I had hoped... that stated, for today's post I would like to do a quick review of one of the products I got from the London Drugs event a couple months ago. I don't think I have enough to say to warrant a whole video, but I did have some thoughts I wanted to share. If you haven't seen my haul, click here to go take a look. If you have, or if you just want my review of this brush, keep reading!

The product I'm reviewing, which you probably know if you read the title, or if you did a Google search on this product looking for reviews, is "The Ultimate Brush" by Conair Infiniti Pro. At least, I think that's the name, the packaging wasn't super clear on that, in my opinion...

Anyways, I'll leave some pictures below of the packaging so you can take a look at all the claims that the brush makes to sell itself, but basically, it is just a regular brush, except that it takes 2 AAA batteries, which are used to power that ion generator. The ions that this brush sends towards your hair are supposed to cancel out the opposite charged ions that make your hair all staticky and frizzy. This is a super awesome concept, and one I'm sure that everyone who has heard of this brush hopes really works. Who doesn't want un-frizzy hair just by brushing it out?! But does it work?

At the event, they were doing a great, quick demo of this product where they took a blown up balloon, rubbed it all over the model's hair, and then brushed it through with this brush while it was turned on. If you've ever tried to brush your hair after making it stand on end with a balloon, you probably know that just brushing is NOT going to make it lie flat! But this brush totally worked on her hair, and that was pretty exciting, and so I had high hopes for it working on everyday frizz in my own hair.

Unfortunately, however, I don't find that this brush does anything spectacular for my hair. This is probably true for a variety of reasons. I'll start by pointing out that my hair is somewhere between extremely wavy and loosely curly, and also very thick and long. Usually, I only brush my hair while it is still damp, because brushing my dry hair causes horrible poofing because it breaks up my natural curls and causes a mess even when I'm not frizzy!

Brushing while wet is surely one of the main reasons this does nothing to stop static in my hair most of the time. However, even when I did test it on my dry hair, I found no change in frizziness whether I brushed with this ionic brush or a regular one. I'm pretty sure this is because my hair is so naturally textured and doesn't lay flat, so my hair will go whatever direction it wants whether it's staticky or not! I'm sure that this works wonders on straight hair, and I've heard good things from some Asian bloggers, who clearly have very different hair than me, so I'm not saying that this brush won't work for anyone, just that it won't work for everyone

Finally, I had a complaint, which may just be a defect in my brush, or it might be a problem with other ones as well, I'm not sure, as I've only ever used my own. However, the crease between the handle and the brush head on my brush has just enough space that EVERY SINGLE TIME I brush my hair with it, my hairs will get stuck in that crack and snap! This is a terrible thing for a hairbrush to do! I hope this is just my own unit, but yeah, it's not good, I tried for a while holding it high up so my hand covered the crack and protected my hair from breakage, but that makes this brush so terribly awkward that I've now completely stopped bothering to use it! (see image below to see the area of the brush I mean)

TL;DR: (that means "too long; didn't read," for those unfamiliar with the term) I do think that this brush works well for those with straighter hair. I do not think it will work for curly-haired girls, or possibly anyone with lots of breakage. I'm really disappointed with the construction of the brush itself in my unit, but this may just be a product defect.

So now it's up to you to decide if this product is worth your time! =P Let me know if you've used this brush and how you liked it! Or let me know if you've been thinking of getting it, I always love to hear from you guys. =)

John Frieda Mixology 101 Event and Product Reviews!

A few weeks ago, I went to an event for John Frieda in Vancouver, held at the Miele Culinary Institute, which was really cool for two reason: 1) The theme of the event (Mixology 101) was basically science class, and the (adorably decorated) classroom worked well for that, and 2) the second half of the evening had some pretty great food and cocktails!

Anyways, the reason for the event was to promote their new Stylist Selections tool--which you can find on the top bar at JohnFrieda.ca:

John Frieda makes some great products, and in a huge array of formulas, so while this tool is of course only going to choose John Frieda products for you, I'm pretty confident that they have something for a majority of hair types and concerns. What the tool does is it presents the user with a survey asking questions about hair type, colour, texture, styling goals, etc. and at the end, presents you with a collection of products best suited to your hair and goals. Sometimes the products will be from the same line, sometimes not, but as they were also promoting, sometimes mixing products to hit all your needs is more effective than using all products from a single line.

Before the event, they emailed a shortened but similar survey to the attendees, and then selected a collection of products best suited to each of our hair types to try out. Here are the products I got:

As you can see, aside from the products, we also each got an apple, pencil, notebook, lab coat, and a Herschel backpack. What? Those things are bloody expensive! I was pretty surprised when I saw them lined up on the counters at the event, but I do admit they are a pretty awesome touch considering the school theme, plus they're a nice gift!

Right, back to the products... I got a mixture of FrizzEase products and Full Repair Shampoo/Conditioner. (I also picked out a couple more products from the displays that interested me, specifically the Dry Shampoo, and the Sheer Blonde lightening spray that I'm now scared I'm not supposed to use on my natural hair (which is darker than most people would classify as blonde, but I digress))

I haven't tried out everything yet, as I want to use each thing fairly steadily to really see how it works for me, before I review, but here's what I've used so far:

FrizzEase Dream Curls Daily Styling Spray:

This spray is meant to lightly condition hair while enhancing natural curl. It is not a hairspray, so it has no crunchiness, and it has a thermal protectant for those who like some form of heat styling.

I love this product. I have very loose curls, which can sometimes fall to frizzy waves, but this product actually helps my hair curl more effectively! It isn't very conditioning, but that isn't really its job, and I don't mind adding a touch of serum or oil once it's dried to help fight off dryness and frizzies. I use this exactly as it suggests on the back, I spray it into towel-dried hair, then scrunch from time to time while my hair air dries.

FrizzEase Original 6 Effects Serum:

This thick serum spreads shockingly well through my thick, textured hair, and my hair loves it! This serum, as its name suggests, is supposed to 1) eliminate frizz, 2) protect against humidity, 3) be a heat protectant, 4) smooth, 5) hydrate, and 6) tame.

I would say it does all those things pretty well. Personally, I use a bit more than it suggests (2-3 pumps vs. 1) and apply to towel-dried hair, instead of soaking wet, but I really do like it! It smells great, like all John Frieda products, and as I said, my hair loves it. My biggest complaint is how tiny one bottle is, but I suppose it's meant to be super concentrated, so we'll see how fast I go through it!

FrizzEase Unwind Curls Calming Creme

This cream is meant to loosen curls and fight frizz. It is fairly moisturizing, but this isn't really my kind of product.

As I said earlier, my curls aren't super tight or defined, and I don't want to loosen them. Which is unfortunate, because now I have two bottles of this (one from the LDBeauty event and one from this John Frieda event)! Maybe it could be good if I wanted to straighten my hair, or if I wanted a wavy style?

And now I wanted to talk about a couple John Frieda products that I received from LDBeauty's event at the beginning of summer, while I'm on the topic anyways:

FrizzEase Secret Weapon Touch-Up Creme:

This is an interesting product, meant for touch-up, not styling. It is meant to eliminate frizz, block UV, and add shine to dry hair whenever needed.

Personally, I don't think it's John Frieda's best product; my hair responds better to oils and serums used in the same way. I see this working better on straighter or finer hair than my own, though, as it is fairly lightweight, while still being hydrating and smoothing!

Luxurious Volume for Colour-Treated Hair Shampoo and Conditioner:

This product is meant to create "boosted volume," "natural-looking fullness," while leaving hair "touchably soft." All while protecting your hair colour.

I haven't coloured my hair in years, so I can't speak to that aspect of this product, but I can talk about this volume it promises. While this shampoo and conditioner definitely leaves my hair feeling silky soft every time, I think it does the opposite of volumizing! Don't get me wrong, I have pretty big, voluminous hair naturally, so this product actually worried me, but somehow this shampoo seems to sleek my hair down instead of boosting it. It's always clean and soft, not oily, but I end up having to fluff my hair more than normal to get my normal body. Very odd. Let me know if you're used this product, and how it worked for you! I'd love to know if my hair's just weird!

FrizzEase Nourishing Oil Elixir:

This elixir contains that argan oil we all know and love for our hair, as well as a thermal protectant, and claims to nourish hair and block frizz.

I love oils for my hair, though this is more of a serum containing oils, but it's great! Wet or dry, this spreads through my hair easily and definitely fights frizz. Excellent, simple product. Again, though, on my thick hair, I use more than the recommended one pump. I think those suggests are so that even those with the thinnest, finest hair won't use too much product, while those of us with thicker, coarser hair need a bit more!

That's all for now! I may do another post in the future when I've tried the rest of my John Frieda products, but make sure to check out the John Frieda Stylist Selections tool online (here) to find your recommendations, if you're interested. And be sure to let me know if you've tried John Frieda before, which products, and how you liked them!
